The deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast on May 26 noon.

Cyclone Yaas Live Updates: The West Bengal government has begun evacuating people from low-lying areas of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts after the India Meteorological Department predicted that cyclone “yash”  which may turn out to be “very severe cyclonic storm”, will make landfall somewhere between Paradwip in Odisha and Sagar in South 24 Parganas on May 26 evening at a speed ranging between 155 km/hr and 165 km/hr.

Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Odisha-West Bengal coast on May 26 noon.

“As per our earlier prediction, the deep depression has intensified into a cyclonic storm at 5.30 am today and it remained at about 540 south-southeast from Paradip and 650 km south-southeast from Balasore. The phenomenon was stationary in the last 6 hours,” weather expert Rajendra Jenamani said.

It will move in north-northwest direction and will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by tomorrow (May 25) morning and a very severe cyclonic storm by May 26 morning, he said.

As per our latest analysis, it is likely to reach the coast between North Odisha and West Bengal in west-north Bay of Bengal in the early morning on May 26 and make landfall at around noon on the same day,” he maintained.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, the cyclone Yaas is 670 kms away from the coast of Digha in West Bengal and is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday night. The India Meteorological Department on Sunday said that Cyclone Yaas will lash Odisha and West Bengal with “highly damaging wind speed” and can be compared to the damage with the last Cyclone, Amphan. Here are the live updates for Cyclone Yaas:

To intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by 24th May morning and further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 24 hours.”

Under its impact, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in coastal parts of Odisha like Khurdha and Puri districts on May 24 night while Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj district are likely to experience heavy downpour on May 25, he pointed out.

The early prediction on wind speed has remained unchanged in the latest analysis. The wind speed will remain 150-165 kmph gusting up to 185 kmph,

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that she had “extensively reviewed the disaster management preparedness with regards to the impending Yaas cyclone with all senior officers of relevant Central and state agencies along with DMs & SPs.

Cyclone Yaas LIVE Updates: All Coastal Districts of Odisha on High Alert, Storm Likely to Hit State on May 26| Low Pressure Over Bay Of Bengal To Trigger Rain In Odisha From May 24: IMD| 2021 cyclone|

A cyclonic system over south-east and adjoining Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger a low pressure area over east-central and north Andman sea today, the regional weather department informed.

The Odisha government has issued high alert in all coastal and adjoining districts in the state in view of the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. Odisha’s Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, after a meeting with senior officials on Friday, said that the state administration is geared up to meet the eventuality if cyclone ‘Yaas’ has any impact on the state.

Mohapatra held a meeting with all line departments, NDRF, Coast Guard, INS Chilika, DG Police, and DG fire services on Friday, news agency ANI reported. Here are live updates on states preparedness for the emerging crisis:

Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic system over south-east and adjoining Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger a low pressure area over east-central and north Andman sea today, the regional weather department informed.

“The low pressure area formed over the central Bay of Bengal is likely to move north-west ward and would intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24. It is likely to hit the coast between Odisha and West Bengal by the morning of May 26,”

The fishermen have been advised to remain away from venturing into the deep Central Bay of Bengal between May 23 and 25. Similarly, they have been warned against fishing activities in North Bay of Bengal and near Odisha coast between May 25 and 27 as the sea condition would remain very rough during the period.

Special relief Commissioner Pradeep K Jena said two airplanes and ships of the Indian Coast Guard are patrolling in the sea to help fishing boats and guide ships to come to the shore before the cyclone hits the state.

➤ Suresh Mohapatra said the Odisha administration is fully prepared to cope with the cyclone. “As things will be more clear about the path of the cyclone in next two-three days, then we will decide that where we have to be more focused,” he said.

All the coastal districts from Ganjam to Balasore have been put on alert. The authorities of these districts have also been directed to stay prepared to launch evacuation drive and post-cyclone relief and rescue operation.

Odisha Update | 2021 | may20 | Cyclone Yaas: Odisha Govt Lists Out Priority Action Plan To Tackle The Storm| Cyclone Update |

  • The intensity of Cyclone Yaas is not clear as different weather forecasting models are suggesting different pictures.
  • Cyclone Yaas may hit Odisha-Bengal coast around May 26, say weather agencies

Odisha government on Thursday said that a slew of measures is already up for immediate implementation by various departments on a priority basis in view of the development of a cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal.

The Cyclone Yaas weather system is likely to hit the eastern or the Coromandel coast of the country on the evening of May 26, the India Meteorological Department said in its tropical cyclone outlook.”

The Cyclone Yaas weather system is likely to hit the eastern or the Coromandel coast of the country on the evening of May 26, the India Meteorological Department said in its tropical cyclone outlook.”

Even as the countdown to season’s first low pressure in Bay of Bengal has begun, satellite images show low and medium clouds with weak to moderate convection intensity in the north Bay..

But clouds having intense to very intense convection have been spotted in the south BoB.

As per model data, these high convective clouds when reaches the east central BoB, the favourable conditions there will then shape up as cyclonic circulation on May 22, which will further steam up to become a low pressure area on May 23.

As per the direction of the Chief Minister, preparations are in full swing for the cyclone at the State and the district level. A draft plan has been made to mobilise emergency rescue and disaster management troops like Fire, ODRAF and NDRF at strategic points but the final execution will be done as soon as we get clear information on the cyclone.

Cyclone Yaas

Directions have been issued to keep flood and cyclone shelters in readiness. Panchayati Raj and Water Resources department has been asked to make necessary preparations to ensure an unhindered drinking water supply and plan to pre-position water tankers wherever necessary to help people during the aftermath of the cyclone.

The Energy Department has been notified to keep manpower resources on alert and equipment on standby. PW department has been entrusted to work out a detailed plan for clearing of roads, tree cutting and other associated restoration works.

The SRC has asked the Animal and Fisheries department to create awareness in coastal belts to prevent entry of fishermen into the sea during the period mentioned by the India Meteorological Department. Similarly, efforts will also be taken to ensure safe return of fishermen still in deep sea.

The sea surface temperature is hot enough to provide the latent heat to developing storm.Data with IMD puts the current SST at 30-31 deg C.

  • It says there is a positive upper level divergence. This is very significant as such a condition will give a boost to cyclone genesis by helping the air mass to rise up.
  • The vertical wind shear is moderate.
  • A positive vorticity withvertical extension up to 200HPA observed.

In the backdrop of such congenial factors, the met agencies worldwide, including IMD, forecast brewing up of a cyclonic storm in Bay.

Why IMD Says Cyclone Yaas Will Come Knocking Odisha – West Bengal Way?

The country’s ace cyclone prediction agency said so going by the location of the low pressure area that is to take shape on the evening of May 22.

Since cyclones always chart a northwest track, Odisha and West Bengal come on its way, the data suggests.

Moreover, the model data of IMD, IITM CGEPS (MME), US-GSF,; ECMWF suggest that the system will initially move in north direction, only tolater chart the north west route – the route where Odisha landmass figures prominently.

As per Regional Specialised Metrological Centre. (RSMC), New Delhi, the apex cyclone warning centre in South Asia, there is a convergence among top numerical Models like IMD-GFS, US-GFS, ECMWF etc that this developing cyclonic system will chart it’s track in the north west direction.

Cyclone Yaas Intensity

The weather models of ECMWF, US-GFS etc, which IMD follows have put the central low pressure of the system at around 960 mb – which means the intensity of the cyclone will be a notch higher than Bulbul ( central pressure 976mb)

Cyclone Yaas Landfall Forecast

Weather men say the landfall place of cyclone Yaas depends on its direction of movement.

Though IMD till date has only hinted that the system will move towards Odisha and West Bengal coast, the models (ECMWF, GFS), which found mentioned in the latest RSMC bulletin, have predicted that going by the north west movement of the system, it is very likely that Cyclone Yaas will make landfall between Kendrapada and Balasore on the night of May 26
